Broughton Castle is about to close to general visitors for the winter. Its 2026 season runs to Wednesday 30 September, and the castle has published no Christmas opening and no 2027 dates yet. Private groups can still visit by appointment. For a day out between now and spring, Rousham’s garden opens every day of the year and Banbury Museum is free.

Broughton Castle’s season

The castle opens to the public on a short summer calendar. Its visitor page gives the 2026 season as Wednesdays, Sundays and bank holiday Mondays from 1 April to 30 September, 2pm to 5pm, with the tea room open from 1.30pm.

Can you visit in winter?

Only as a group. The castle says “private groups are welcome by appointment throughout the year”, at the same price per person and with the £400 minimum. Bookings go through the castle office at office@broughtoncastle.com.

The castle’s website lists no Christmas event, winter open day or 2027 season dates. The 2026 season began on 1 April. We will add next year’s dates when the castle publishes them.

Open through the winter

Rousham garden

Rousham says its garden is “open every day of the year from 10am”. Last admission is at 4.30pm and the garden closes at dusk.

  • Price: £10 a person, paid on arrival
  • Children: no children under 15 without prior permission
  • Dogs: not allowed

The house opens only to groups by arrangement, at £20 a person with a minimum fee of £200. With its rule on children, Rousham is a walk for adults, not a family outing.

Banbury Museum, on Spiceball Park Road by the canal, is free to enter and needs no booking.

  • Hours: Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, Sunday 11am to 3pm
  • Closed: Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day
  • Temporary exhibitions carry a charge. The current one, Brickworks, runs until Sunday 1 November.

The museum has not yet listed the exhibition that follows Brickworks.
