The town council's biggest event of the year runs 11am to 5pm on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, free to enter, and a dry canal will not cancel it.

Banbury Canal Festival is confirmed for Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October 2026, 11am to 5pm on both days, and it is free. Banbury Town Council calls it “our largest event of the year”, and it runs along the canal side and through the town centre rather than in one fenced field.

The 2026 dates are on the council’s own event listing and in the calendar its events system publishes, both read on 5 September 2026.

The council runs it with Tooley’s Boatyard, The Mill Arts Centre, Castle Quay, The Village Butty, Lock.29, Bridge Street Community Garden and Banbury Museum and Gallery, so the festival spreads across all of those sites rather than sitting in one spot.

What is actually on

The council’s published programme for 2026 promises boat tours, craft stalls from canal communities around the country, talks and demonstrations, scavenger hunts, funfair rides and food stalls. Live theatre comes from The Mill Arts Centre. Banbury Music Mix Radio and The Village Butty are bringing acoustic acts to the stages.

Tooley’s Boatyard is the reason to come early. It has a working blacksmith’s forge and a museum, and the council describes its dry dock as the oldest functioning canal dry dock in the country. It opens up for the festival.

Named acts and a running order have not been published yet. In previous years the line-up has landed in the fortnight before the festival, and we will add it here when it does.

Dry weather will not cancel it

This is worth saying plainly, because it nearly stopped the festival last year. In 2025 a long dry spell shut several canal channels and there was real doubt about whether the event could run.

Banbury Town Council has answered that for 2026 in its own FAQ. Tooley’s and its boats are on site all year round, and most of the attractions arrive by road, so the festival will not be cancelled because of drought.

Other weather is a different matter. The council says it is monitoring conditions and that serious high winds or rainfall could force it to close the festival, “at least for one of the days”. If that call comes it will come late, so check the council’s page on the morning.

Getting there and parking

No road closure has been published for this one. Oxfordshire County Council’s large public events register, which carries the special event orders for the Banbury 10K, the Michaelmas Fair and the rest of the county’s street events, lists nothing for the Canal Festival, and nothing has appeared on the Public Notice Portal either. Both were checked on 5 September 2026. That fits an event held on the towpath and inside Castle Quay rather than on the carriageway.

So the normal town centre rules apply. Council car parks charge until 6pm, and Sunday is not free: it is £1.60 for up to an hour and then a £2.20 flat rate. Castle Quay is £1.60 all day on a Sunday, which beats the council rate and puts you next to the festival. Our Banbury parking page has every tariff and the bays that changed on 30 June 2026.

Banbury station is a ten-minute walk along the canal to the site, which is the easiest arrival if you are coming from Oxford or Bicester.

What is still to be confirmed

  • The entertainment line-up and stage times. Expected late September.
  • Which stalls and traders are booked. The council is still taking applications at events@banbury.gov.uk.
  • Any last-minute weather closure, which would only come on the day.
